Thoughts of the Past Year at Foundation

Here's some thoughts about my experience with foundation course. Whether you're interested in applying for one in the future or just passing through my blog; here is an honest opinion from a UAL student.

The Pros
  1. I would say that the highlight of foundation course were to meet new people. I met an interesting range of people during this course from all different aspects of life. You don't need to be a person who just came straight from college. Many people have taken gap years or have worked before returning back to education. Saying that, it was great to learn from others. Everyone is different but yet we were united through art.
  2. Timetable - We were only scheduled to come in 3 days a week. The other days we were allowed to do whatever we wanted to.
  3. Hiring equipment, using studios and using workshop areas were all free. The only thing we paid for was the materials. London College of Communications is the best place for printing traditionally. The staff are also super friendly.
  4. Free tech talks and workshop tutorials.
  5. MY TUTOR WAS AWESOME. (I can't say for the rest of the tutors however)
  6. It's free! (if you are a UK citizen)

The Cons
  1. I did not expect to not rotate between pathways. I studied graphics pathway and just stayed in it for the whole year- the expectation for a foundation course is to experiment with the other 5 pathways before choosing the right one to stay in.
  2. Less about technique and more about thinking. I though we were going to learn about typography and art techniques but boy was I wrong. We were more immersed into different ways of thinking and not taking the obvious route which was fine however I would have preferred to have more lessons on Photoshop or Illustrator for example.
  3. Poor student life = ART LIFE IS EXPENSIVE.
  4. Canteen is always so packed.
  5. The government are cutting foundation places this year which is their nonchalent way of saying creative students do not deserve free education. #OccupyUAL

The course just flew by like a blink of an eye.

I don't regret doing this course at all. It's made me grow and more certain about what I want to study for next year.
