The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: 花樣年華

Hello my dear readers, I've been inspired to come up with a few designs based on this phrase:花樣年華

In chinese and korean 花樣年華 means the most beautiful era in a lifetime, like how a flower blooms. This usually refers to the age range of 14-20.

Now if you are a BTS fan you would recognise that their whole album was based on this phrase. After researching it I felt that it was very relatable to me. The whole meaning is beautiful and their album reflected the epitomy of blossoming.

Now why did this inspire me so much? I felt like time was flying by; the feeling of growing up scares me yet it is refreshing to learn new experiences. My mindset still feels like a teenager but my age says otherwise. I wanted to create a design that showed a springlike theme where everything was fresh, new and natural.

Here's the first design. It looks very similar to a chinese painting which I thought was appropiate for the phrase and also from my background. I was going to print this design on tote bags at university but... I was not allowed. Why? Well that's another story I will write another time. Since I didn't get them printed I thought I would just post the designs online instead.

If you have seen my prior illustrations you would know I am currently into pattern making.

And this design is king for me. Which one out of the three do you prefer?

But it doesn't stop here, last week I visited Brighton and I was able to carry on this theme with photography.

I did double exposure with my polaroid camera. The theme was yet again to have flowers fused with the subject. The beauty of the photos is that the flowers are a representation of the person standing in front of it. It's like reading the person's personality by the flower they choose.

I wish I had a bigger polaroid camera however.

Lastly, I'll share where the inspiration came from. I have been watching a chinese drama called Empress of China and I can say that their costume design suited 花樣年華 perfectly. The colours are vivid and sharp.

The second is BTS's album shoot themselves: it's fresh yet melancholic at the same time.

And what I love about their shoot is that they used film camera for their shoot.

Have a listen to their intro and read what the lyrics mean in english below:

The third is from my favourite photographer: Takeshi Suga

The double exposure on these are just magical.

Thanks are reading, any feedback on my work would be appreciated :)
